Operation Fact Check

FALSE

What the corporate lobbyists are saying:

“Economists say” Measures 66 and 67 will cost 70,000 jobs.

The Truth:

Under Measure 67, 97.5% of businesses will pay just $150 or will pay no more than they do today. It’s impossible to believe that anyone will lose their job over $150. The two “economists” cited by the opponents are closely associated with the rightwing anti-tax group Cascade Policy Institute. Their claims have been thoroughly debunked by actual economists, including 36 of Oregon’s leading economists and experts at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, who called the claim “misleading” and “fatally flawed.” [Source]

FACT: Mainstream economists, including the White House’s budget director, agree that in a recession, it’s economically better for states to raise taxes on corporations and the rich rather than making deep cuts to critical services that families rely on. By raising the $10 corporate tax on large out-of-state corporations, these measures will keep hundreds of millions of dollars circulating in the Oregon economy. Plus, Measures 66 and 67 will bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in federal matching funds.

These steps will keep demand for Oregon goods and services high, protecting good jobs right here in Oregon.

If the measures fail, thousands of teachers, nurses, home care workers, state troopers and more will be laid off.
